Photog Tips: How to Pose that Christmas Card Shot

The holidays are a time for family, friends, and, of course, capturing those perfect moments to share with loved ones. As photographers, we know the pressure is on to deliver stunning Christmas card photos for our clients. But don't worry, I'm sharing my favorite tips and tricks to ensure your clients walk away with holiday card-worthy magic.

Planning ahead of time

The key to a fantastic Christmas card photo starts well before the session itself. Throughout the year, plant the seed of Christmas card photos in your clients' minds. During family sessions, casually ask, "Have you thought about Christmas cards? Would you like to capture one with a specific theme or background in mind?" This shows you're proactive and invested in providing them with extra value.

Understanding Their Vision

Next, take the time to understand your client's vision for their card. Do they crave a classic posed group shot with everyone looking their best against a snowy backdrop (perfect for a traditional card design)? Or are they a more playful bunch, seeking a candid "action shot" amidst the holiday chaos (ideal for a more whimsical card)? Understanding their style and desired card design will guide your posing strategy.

Posing for Perfection (with a Little Help from My Guide)

This is where my family posing guide comes in handy! It equips you with several posing options to suit any family dynamic or desired aesthetic. My go-to strategy for posing families is made up of three basic steps.

1. Get dad in place.

He’s our anchor, the pillar of the family. Get him in just the right spot, so the whole
family will be in good light and have the desired background.

2. Place mom.

Take extra time to make sure mom is posed in a flattering way, that her curves are accentuated, and that any area she may be self-conscious about is well disguised. Little things like making sure her ring is facing the right way, the clasp of her necklace isn’t showing, and no straps are peeking out all make a big difference in the end result. They not only make the picture that much more perfect, but they also save you time in editing!

3. Insert children.

Once Mom and Dad are in place and looking great, insert children around them. Use the children to create interest with a variety of heights (avoid stepping stairs or huge gaps in height), make sure the colors or patterns of their outfits aren’t clashing, and help create connections between family members.

Going Candid

For those clients seeking a more relaxed vibe, embrace candid moments. Capture the kids decorating the tree, building a snowman, or snuggling by the fireplace with a mug of hot cocoa. These candid shots often exude genuine holiday joy, perfect for a more informal card design.

Don't forget the "Wow" factor

Finally, consider incorporating a little "wow" factor into your shots. This could be anything from festive props to a strategically placed Christmas tree ornament. Just be sure the props complement the overall theme and don't overpower the family.

By following these tips and utilizing my family posing guide, you'll be well on your way to capturing Christmas card photos that will have your clients raving. Remember, the holidays are about family, fun, and capturing genuine moments. So relax, have fun with it, and let the festive spirit guide your lens!
